Kelsey Rothery- Update
April was certainly a month to remember for me, with Gaz and I taking out the Ferndale CCI1* NZ One Day Championship at Kihikihi Horse Trials.
As always, John Nicolson and the organising committee at Kihikihi put on a stellar event, doing dressage on the velvet smooth polo grounds is always a pleasure. Gazza did a lovely test and I was very pleased with his score-it’s not always that the dressage judges agree with you!
The cross-country was beautifully presented and Gaz flew around, coming in nicely under time (as one would expect!). He really starting to feel very confident in his cross country now and I can’t wait to step him up a level in the spring. I was pleasantly surprised to see I had moved up to =2!
Showjumping day dawned and I was absolutely delighted with Gaz, as he jumped a careful clear around a course that was causing its fair share of problems. Unfortunately for the leader, she had one down, as did the other 2= place getter so I was delighted to find myself the winner-which was very unexpected, it was a very competitive championship class and I had said before the weekend if I finish top 10 I’ll be happy and be even happier to come home with a ribbon! It is a nice feeling to have produced a horse right from off the track and for it all to come together on the day, and even better to win a lovely dress rug and some silver ware! I also got some lovely photos to remember the day, I am wearing my Cortez shirt, Gel Full Seat Breeches, Arista Helmet and Galtymore Tall Boots. The Cortez Shirt I think is my lucky charm, I always seem to come home with a ribbon wearing it!
Harriet my 3yo daughter was also there, kitted out in her Dublin polo and cap!
The rest of the month has been pretty quiet, Gaz and I pay our way at home by helping out with the newly broken in TBs at the track for their first week or two, we accompany them around the track and are hopefully a calming influence. It’s also a good fitness session, if a little unorthodox as a lead up for the major events of the season!
We also went to a practice showjumping day at St Peters, where my favourite Dublin outfit came out (the aqua Inwood Polo, Edge navy breeches and Arista helmet)
May will be the final month for us competition wise, then we are both looking forward to some R and R over winter!
